Einmal nach ganz oben und zurück: Ex-«Genesis»-Sänger Ray Wilson auf Station in der Frankfurter Batschkapp.

Manche Karrieren verlaufen schnurgerade, andere enden vor 150 Zuschauern. So geschehen bei Ray Wilson auf seiner aktuellen Tournee. Umso erstaunlicher, wenn man die Stationen seiner Biografie betrachtet. Dort stehen so illustre Namen wie «Stiltskin», «Scorpions», «Turntablerockers» und sogar die Rocklegende «Genesis», die ihm auf der letzten Welttournee ein Tausender-Publikum garantierte.
Ein wenig Wehmut sorgte deshalb für die einzige Disharmonie während 120 Minuten, die eindrucksvoll wach riefen, warum er einst zum Phil-Collins-Nachfolger berufen wurde. Das helle Timbre ist einzigartig, genauso wie sein Songwriter-Talent, mit dem nicht erst seit seinem aktuellen Album «The Next Best Thing» Eindruck hinterlassen hat. Wilson ist ein Meister in der Live-Inszenierung textlich metaphernreicher Song-Perlen, die von sehnsüchtigen Moll-Balladen bis zu wütenden Rock-Viertaktern reichen. Auf diese Weise begann der gebürtige Schotte schon einmal seine Laufbahn in kleinen Clubs. Nicht wegzudenken ist deshalb die meist tonangebende Akustik-Klampfe. Den Rest der musikalischen Sahnehäubchen schöpft dieses Mal seine Band ab. Songs wie «The Fool In Me» oder «Adolescent Breakdown» bestechen durch kraftvolle Keyboard-Akkorde und hymnische Melodien. Rockträger Wilson zeigt aber auch seine ausgeprägt introvertierte Seite mit «Ever The Reason» und «How High».
Mit der Neuaufnahme des «Stiltskin»-Hits «Inside» und den uralten «Genesis»-Klassikern «In The Air Tonight», «Follow You Follow Me» oder «The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway» gelingt ihm sogar hörenswerte Vergangenheitsbewältigung. Musik ist manchmal nicht die schlechteste aller Therapieformen.

Some careers go straightforward, others end in front of 150 spectators. As is the case with Ray Wilson on his current tour. Which is the more astonishing, if you look at the stations of his career. They include such illustrious names like “Stiltskin”, “Scorpions”, “Turntablerockers” and even rock legend “Genesis”, guaranteeing him an audience of thousands on the last world tour.
Therefore, a bit of melancholy was the only disharmony during 120 minutes revealing impressively why he was once invited to succeed Phil Collins. His bright timbre is unique, as is his talent as a songwriter, this impressing the listeners yet before his current record “The Next Best Thing” had been released. Wilson is a genius in live staging gems of songs with rich textual metaphors reaching from yearning ballads in minor to angry rock-‘fourth-of-bars’. The native Scot started his career in small pubs earlier before. Therefore, he can’t do without his dominant acoustic guitar. This time, his band gains the rest of the cake . Songs like “The Fool in Me” or “Adolescent Breakdown” fascinate with powerful keyboard-chords and melodic hymns. But Kilt-wearing Wilson shows his distinct introverted side with “Ever the Reason” and “How High”, too.
By re-recording “Stiltskin’s” hit “Inside” and the old Genesis classics “In the Air Tonight”, “Follow you, Follow me” or “The Lamb Lies down on Broadway” he even achieves to coming to terms with his past worth-listening to. Sometimes music is not the worst of all therapeutic methods.
