Ray Wilson begeisterte
Kreuztal. Ray Wilson & Band waren die Attraktion am Samstag Abend. Im Rahmen der "The Next Best Thing"- Europatour überzeugten sie in der Otto-Flick-Halle mit einer Mischung aus gefühlvollen und kraftvollen Rocksongs.
Mitte der Neunziger feierte der 36-jährige Schotte Ray Wilson als Sänger der Alternative-Rockband Stiltskin erste Erfolge. Ihre Single "Inside" wurde ein Nummer-eins-Hit. Weltbekannt wurde Wilson allerdings erst 1996 als Nachfolger von Phil Collins bei der Rocklegende Genesis. Doch wegen mangelnden Erfolgs trennte sich Genesis nach nur einem gemeinsamen Album und einer Tournee von Wilson.
Seit 2001 ist Ray Wilson erfolgreich auf Solopfaden unterwegs als Sänger, Songwriter, Multiinstrumentalist und Produzent. Wurden Wilson & Band anfangs als Vorprogramm für andere Gruppen gebucht, treten sie nun mit eigenem Support auf. So auch in Kreuztal.
Zunächst kam der Wahl-Hamburger und gebürtige Hawaianer Kàlè samt Akustikgitarre auf die Bühne. Mit seiner Version rhythmischer und vom Blues angehauchter Songs versuchte er Stimmung zu machen. Das Publikum reagierte verhalten. Doch um 21 Uhr taute es auf. Ray Wilson erschien mit seiner vierköpfigen Band. Vor etwa 450 Zuschauern braute er ein Ohrenschmaus aus alten Genesis-Nummern, Songs seiner drei Soloalben und Werken seiner alten Bands Stiltskin und Cut zusammen. Dabei harmonierte die Band perfekt. Keiner der fünf Musiker versuchte sich in den Vordergrund zu spielen. Trotz der stellenweise ruhigen und melancholischen Stücke steigerte sich die Begeisterung des Publikums. Es klatschte und sang gerade bei den rockigen Songs euphorisch mit.
Sympathisch mit rauer Stimme
Selbst technische Probleme und eine kurze Unterbrechung brachten Wilson & Band nicht aus dem Konzept. Der sympathische Sänger mit der rauen Stimme reagierte auf alles humorvoll und gelassen. Er versorgte das Publikum nicht nur mit Anekdoten aus seiner Zeit bei Genesis, sondern lieferte sich auch noch unterhaltsame Wortgefechte mit seinem Bruder und Gitarristen Steve. Die Mischung aus melodischen Balladen, eigenen Rocksongs und einigen Rocklassikern kam bei den Zuschauern sehr gut an.
Nach beinahe drei Stunden und sieben Zugaben erhielten Wilson
& Band anhaltenden Applaus. Die Fans waren begeistert und wurden zufrieden
entlassen.

Ray Wilson was electrifying
Kreuztal. Ray Wilson & Band were the attraction last Saturday night. On their European “The Next Best Thing” tour they convinced the audience at Otto-Flick-Halle with a mixture of emotional and powerful rock songs.
In the mid-90s 36 year old Scot Ray Wilson had his first successes as singer of alternative rockers “Stiltskin”. Their single “Inside” became a no. 1 hit. Yet, Wilson just gained world renown when in 1996 he succeeded Phil Collins with rock legend Genesis. But due to failing success Genesis stopped cooperation with Wilson after just one common record and one tour.
From 2001 on Ray Wilson has been successful on his own as singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Had they been booked as support act for other bands previously, they now perform with their own support, such as in Kreuztal, too.
Firstly Hamburg-based and native Hawaiian Kálè came on stage with his acoustic guitar. With his version of rhythmic and bluesy songs he tried to get the listeners into mood. But they were reserved till 9 p.m., when they unbent after Ray Wilson had appeared on stage with his band of four. To about 450 people he did a musical treat with songs from Genesis, of his three solo records and from his bands Stiltskin and Cut. The band perfectly harmonized. None of the five musicians tried to thrust himself forward and in spite of the partly calm and melancholic pieces the audience got more and more enthusiastic, clapping and singing along just euphorically with the rock songs.
Sympathetic with rough voice
Even technical problems and a short interruption couldn’t rattle Wilson & Band. The sympathetic, rough-voiced singer reacted humorously and cool to all that. He not only told anecdotes from his time with Genesis to the audience, but also had entertaining words with his brother and guitarist Steve. The audience very much liked his mixture of melodic ballads, own rock songs and some rock classics.
After almost three hours and seven encores Wilson & Band received rounds and rounds of cheers from the fans, who were electrified and left very contently.
