Mit Gefühl und Kraft

KOMMERN. Ray Wilson & Band waren die Attraktion in der Reithalle „Im
Mühlental“ an der Sommerrodelbahn in Kommern. Wilson überzeugte
bei seinem dreieinhalbstündigen Programm mit einer Mischung aus gefühlvollen
und kraftvollen Rocksongs. Nach seinem Auftritt zeigte sich Ray Wilson publikumsnah,
gab Autogramme und ging unter die vielen Fans.
Mitte der Neunziger feierte der 36-jährige Schotte Ray Wilson als Sänger
der Alternative-Rockband „Stiltskin“ erste Erfolge. Ihre Single
„Inside“ wurde ein Nummer-Eins-Hit und ist auch heute noch in vielen
Ohren eine bekannte Melodie. „Die Leute können sich an dem Leid einfach
nicht satt hören“, sagte Wilson.
Und er muss es wissen, denn seit Jahren ist dieser Song eine feste Größe
in der Liste seiner Liveshows. Weltbekannt wurde Wilson erst 1996 als Nachfolger
von Phil Collins bei der Rocklegende Genesis.
Doch wegen mangelnden Erfolgs trennte sich Genesis nach nur einem gemeinsamen
Album und einer Tournee von Wilson. Seit 2001 ist Ray Wilson erfolgreich auf
Solopfaden als Sänger, Songwriter, Multiinstrumentalist und Produzent unterwegs.
Wurden Wilson & Band anfangs als Vorprogramm für andere Gruppen gebucht,
treten sie nun mit eigenem Support auf. So auch in Kommern, wo das neue Album
„The next best thing“, zwölf Musikstücke zwischen Rock
und Folk, im Mittelpunkt standen. Der Konzertabend wurde von Daniel Denecke
eröffnet. „Er ist einer der viel versprechenden jungen deutschen
Songwriter der letzten Jahre“, so der Initiator des Abends, Harry Braun
von „Eifel-Events“.
Trotz des Schneetreibens fanden auch Fan-Clubs aus Regensburg und Niedersachsen
den Weg nach Kommern. Vom Bahnhof Mechernich und der Burg Satzvey fuhr ein kostenloser
Shuttle-Dienst zur Sommerrodelbahn und zurück. Bereits im letzten Jahr
holte Harry Braun Ray Wilson in die Eifel. Damals wurde noch auf der Burg Satzvey
gespielt. Dies geschah auch, als Ray Wilson vor drei Jahren ohne Band in die
Eifel kam und ein Solo präsentierte. Doch in diesem Jahr musste die Burg
Satzvey wegen anderen Verpflichtungen Harry Braun absagen. Kurzerhand ging es
in die Hallen der Sommerrodelbahn. Im nächsten Jahr sei eine Akustik-Tour
mit Ray Wilson und seinem Bruder und Gitarristen Steve geplant. „Ray fühlt
sich ausgesprochen wohl bei uns. Vielleicht können wir ihn für das
nächste Jahr wieder buchen“, verriet Braun.

Kommern. Ray Wilson and band were the attraction in Kommern’s Riding Hall “Im Mühlental” right beside the summer toboggan-run. Wilson convinced the audience with a gig of 3/12 hours, mixing expressively sensitive with powerful rock songs. After his concert he went to mingle with his fans and autographed his merchandise.
In the mid-nineties 36 year old Scot Ray Wilson had his first successes as singer of alternative rockers “Stiltskin”. Their single “Inside” became a no. 1 hit and still today is a very well known melody to many people. “People just can’t get enough of that song”, Wilson tells.
And he must be the one to know this, because this song has its firm place in the setlists of his shows. Wilson got world renown as late as 1996, when succeeding Phil Collins with rock legend Genesis.
But due to failing success Genesis quit working with Wilson after only one common record and one tour. Since 2001 Ray is successful on his own as singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer. Had Wilson and band been booked as support for other bands in the beginning, they now go on stage with their own support, as was the case in Kommern, where they focussed on presenting the new record “The Next Best Thing”, twelve songs ranging from rock to folk. Daniel Denecke played as support at the evening. “He is one of the very promising young German songwriters of the recent years”, Harry Braun of “Eifel-Events”, the initiator of the evening, stated.
In spite of the snow even fan clubs from Regensburg and Niedersachsen came to see Ray in Kommern. The Mechernich railway station and Burg Satzvey offered a free shuttle-service to the summer toboggan-run and back. Harry Braun got Ray Wilson to play in the area last year, too, being in Castle Satzvey then, which he also managed to do three years ago, when Ray Wilson came around there without his band for a solo. But unfortunately, the gig at Satzvey had to be cancelled due to other obligations and the venue at the toboggan-run had to be taken. Next year Ray Wilson is going to do an acoustic tour with his brother and guitarist Steve. “Ray is feeling very happy here. Maybe we can book him again for next year”, Braun revealed.
