Ashley was born in Scotland's ancient capital Dunfermline, and immediately found interest in music, the drums in particular, after seeing Metallica perform at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert in April 1992.

After working that whole summer he had finally saved enough money to buy his first drum kit and soon found himself playing with local young musicians from school or whom he'd met through his older brother Lawrie.

His first live performance was at 14 years with some friends playing just about everything from Nirvana to Sepultura at a local live music venue called 'The White House' this then led to an audition with a death metal band- "Defaced". This foray into the darker side was short lived. After sitting in with his uncle's 'rock-covers' band it was not long before more conventional gigs started to come in which led to the position as resident drummer at a local jam night which still runs to this day.

Performing in and around Dunfermline he has had the opportunity to perform live with the late Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson of Big Country, with whom he was drummer in Bruce's side project Wild Blue Yonder and appeared at the T In The Park festival 1997.

His first professional gig as a full time musician was with the band Iron Horse whose previous drummer, Lee Agnew now with Nazareth, had recommended him for the job. The band's touring took him to diverse destinations from Finland through Holland and Germany, down to Brittany then over the pond to Florida and even Uzbekistan!!

Through his friendship with Iron Horse's Brian McAlpine (keyboards, accordion), who had performed on the 2003 Change album, he was introduced to Ray and has been actively involved with him as part of his live touring band, also appearing on his 2004 Next Best Thing album and can be heard more recently on the new live double CD Ray Wilson Live.
